Yesterday, I made my way to Dayton to visit some school schools to check on 2019 and 2020 prospects, but my purpose was watch Alter’s Connor Bazelak throw and John Bivens catch and run the football. Both are sophomores.
Made stops at Springfield, Wayne, Trotwood, and Northmont. All have players and all have some good young prospects.
Connor Bazelak, a promising QB in the 2019 Class, had scheduled a workout in front of some college coaches for after school. Another promising sophomore was RB.
First saw Connor last fall throwing during pregame against Indian Hill. Like his 6’4-200 frame, but needs to continue get stronger, but he will. On his HUDL Highlights, I like his accuracy and “QB-presence.” Liked his feel for the game.
Yesterday, he threw the ball with good velocity and accuracy. With the bad weather, he threw in the gym, but threw enough to make a good impression. Good release. Good follow-thru. Needs to work on his base and footwork some. But all correctable.
Only a sophomore, with little game experience, but he will be fine. Plays in one of the top football programs in Ohio. Coach Ed Domsitz, known for his powerful running attack, will make use of Connor’s throwing talent.
Also liked RB John Bivens. Also in the Class of 2019. At 6’0-190, he ran really well last year. Powerful. Good burst. Breaks tackles. Gets north/south.
Talked with him yesterday. Really like his attitude. Did not catch the ball, as well as I would like, but he is a runner first. Plus, it is May. Not a slot receiver, and he will be fine. Big and can run.
Early, but after watching him last fall and watching him yesterday, if he keeps working on the field and in the classroom, John Bivens is going to be a really high-profiled recruit. All of the tools. Plus, good communicator.
One other sophomore to watch is defensive lineman Connor Meyer. Guessin 6’3-235, but looks bigger. Did not run, but watched in the weight room. Strong. Young and will get bigger/stronger/faster.
HUDL video is important for evaluating a prospect. But, to me, seeing a young prospect workout or compete in any sport, is huge. Their effort tells me a lot.
