I enjoy putting on the Underclassman Showcase in the spring. Young players have a chance to get better. Have a chance to compete. Get some early exposure. Best of all, I get a chance to meet them personally.
University School’s senior quarterback came to the Showcase as a freshman and sophomore. Now he is beginning his senior year and, just recently, committed to Youngstown State University.
Jayden Cunningham has been quarterbacking at University School for a long time. I believe that I have watched him every year. We joked about that after last Tuesday’s scrimmage. As he should, he has gotten stronger and smarter every year. His arm strength has improved as well.
Last year I watched him against Cleveland NDCL. The offensive line was overmatched and linebackers were coming from everywhere. Not a good game for Jayden. Some of the blame went to him as well. But the positive was that I never saw him point a finger, lose his cool, or start getting into any of his teammates. Liked his character.
Like his initial footwork. Like his release. Like his QB skills. Needs to set his feet more. Like the way he stays in the pocket. Needs to be more consistent at times with his accuracy.
I would guess that he redshirts his first year at YSU. Fortunately, he is working under one of the better quarterback coaches in Ohio. Shane Montgomery is patient and understands QB mechanics. Big plus is that he is an excellent teacher.
YSU is a good place for Jayden. Maybe his 6’1 height concerned some D1 quarterback coaches. Maybe his level of competition. Maybe his inconsistency at times. Last Tuesday, he played okay against Glenville and Lorain. Whatever that means.
Watching Jayden get better and better over the years has been fun. I wish him the best at YSU.
