I do not get it done every year, but right after the NFL draft, I like to read the list of Ohio high school background players who were drafted in the first six rounds. This morning I found a list that made it easy.
Hopefully, if you have followed for me for a while, you realize I care almost nothing for the NFL. I know that we are in a new culture, but that does not mean I have to like the NFL. College football is fun, but my free time is limited when it comes to watching games on the flat screen.
Ohio high school football is my passion. Most kids have not reached the “me-me” stage. Rules and regulations limit some of the silliness. High school coaches still to limit some of the show time stuff.
The following players with Ohio backgrounds were taken in the six rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Of course, I remember them. Just made some comments about them and what I thought about them in their high school football playing days. All “bought into the college game.”
Mason Schreck – QB at Medina HS. A big QB, but after watching him play high school basketball, he was an obvious tight end on the next level. Played TE at Buffalo from almost day one. Buffalo – Cincinnati Bengals 7th
Ifeadi Odenigbo – DE at Centerville HS. Long. Raw. Tough. Good quickness off the edge. Needed to get bigger. Needed to work on change of direction. Northwestern – Minnesota Vikings 7th
Jake Butt – TE/DE at Pickerington North HS. Tremendous athlete with good speed. Some colleges were worried how big he would get in college. Some were worried about his round shoulders. I liked him because he was big, tough and an excellent ball catcher. Michigan – Denver Broncos 5th
Shelton Gibson – WR/DB at Cleveland Heights HS. Tremendous athlete. Tough. Competitive. Not the most disciplined high school player. Grades were of a concern. Physically mature as a senior. West Virginia – Philadelphia Eagles. 5th
Ben Gideon – LB/RB at Hudson HS. Liked his size, but knew he would have to get bigger. Needed to get faster and better change of direction. Smart. Played hard. Physical. Michigan – Minnesota Vikings 4th
Michael Roberts – TE/DE at Cleveland Benedictine HS. Excellent athlete. Big, strong, and mature. Needed to run better, but a natural TE. Grades were suspect. Playing hard every down was a concern to me. Toledo – Detroit Lions. 4th
Dawaune Smoot – Really athletic. Ran well. Needed to get bigger on the next level. Athletic. Good quickness off the edge. Liked his toughness. Illinois – Jacksonville Jaguars 3rd
Pat Elflein – OL/DL at Pickerington North HS. Good football player. Not as tall as most OL prospects. Physical. Good feet. Good balance. Impressed me on the wrestling mat. Needs to thank Luke Fickell. Ohio State – Minnesota Vikings. 3rd
Chris Wormley – OL/DE at Toledo Whitmer HS. Liked that he played 3 sports well. Big. Athletic for big man. Good motor. Ran well for a big man. Tremendous competitor. Michigan – Baltimore Ravens 3rd
Kareem Hunt – RB at Willoughby South HS. Fast. Tough. Excellent vision. Burst. Balance. Joked with about his shortness, but he got better the more carries that he had. Was overlooked by bigger school programs. Toledo – Kansas City Chiefs 3rd
Adam Shaheen – TE at Big Walnut HS. Better at basketball in high school. Did not have rated high, but liked his athleticism when I saw him on the court. Got bigger/stronger/faster in college. Missed him. Ashland – Chicago Bears 2nd
DeShone Kiser – QB at Toledo Central Catholic HS. First him his 10th grade year against Toledo St Johns. Good feet. Did not like QB throwing skills. Long armed. Like his leadership and his self confidence. Smart. The big schools in the Midwest did not recruit him hard. Notre Dame did not find him. Notre Dame – Cleveland Browns 2nd
Mitch Trubisky – QB at Mentor HS. Saw him take a beating against St Ignatius his 10th grade year. Great character kid. Solid arm. Liked his size. Smart. More of a drop back QB, but can escape. North Carolina was a good fit for him. Natural leader. North Carolina – Chicago Bears 1st
Marshon Lattimore – WR/DB at Glenville HS. Liked him better as a WR. He did too. Good burst. Natural athlete. Fast. Smart. Competed. Liked his toughness. In high school compared him to Teddy Ginn Jr. Finally bought in at OSU. Ohio State – New Orleans Saints 1st
Gareon Conley – WR/DB at Massillon HS. Long. Fast. Good ball skills. Good hips. Played WR equally as well. Needed to get bigger/stronger. Worked hard. Physical. Thought that he was a good receiver, as well. Ohio State – Los Angeles Raiders 1st
Taco Charlton – TE/DE at Pickerington Central HS. First saw him his 9th grade year. Tall. Long. Good quickness off edge. Watching him in a basketball game at Pick Central convinced me , he was a top recruit. Did not play hard every down. Physical Michigan – Dallas Cowboys 1st
A number of players with Ohio high school backgrounds signed free agent contracts have signed contracts. Harder to find. May try to get something together later in week.
